BOBBY ROBSON brought back John Barnes and the Liverpool playmaker made a big impact by releasing Gary Lineker for the opener.
Barnes made it two with a left-foot volley and Neil Webb claimed England’s third after good work from David Rocastle.

ENGLAND secured their place in the World Cup finals with a bore draw in Poland. Although the Poles still had two games left, England were seven points clear in the Group Two table.

HAVING given England the lead with a 40th-minute penalty, Gary Lineker needed eight stitches in a head wound after being accidentally kicked trying to reach a 52nd-minute cross.
Boss Graham Taylor sent on Peter Beardsley and he scored in the 89th minute.

GARY LINEKER scored his sixth goal in five games against Poland. His strike saved Spurs team-mate Gary Mabbutt from the prospect of being the luckless scapegoat for an England defeat.
Mabbutt deflected Roman Szewczyk’s shot past Chris Woods.

IAN WRIGHT netted his first England goal and one of his most crucial. The striker met Tony Dorigo’s 84th-minute cross with a half-volley.
It was a relief for boss Graham Taylor as Dariusz Adamczuk had been gifted the 35th-minute opener.

THE Three Lions won for the first time in Poland since 1966 with goals from Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham.
Shearer, who was kicked throughout, epitomised the spirit in the side.
Paul Ince set him up on six minutes and Robert Lee found Sheringham in the dying seconds.
